If you’ve ever talked to a professional about your child struggling with substance use, chances are you’ve heard a common refrain — to take care of yourself. But why would a professional tell you to focus your energies on yourself, if your child is the one who needs saving?
The reason self-care is so important and so emphasized is because many parents unfortunately burn themselves out while trying to help their child, and therefore can be no help to them. As one parent put it, “We became as sick as he was – just trying to save him.”
